A 17-year-old boy named Reggis Harris who survived a heart condition has beaten all odds to win as he earns 1.6 million dollars worth of scholarships to different universities in the United States.
Reggis Harris, a Douglas County teen was born with a heart condition that caused him to undergo an open heart surgery two days after his birth which he survived. The doctors told his parents that the heart condition would delay him developmentally.
But Reggis defied all the odds against him, he survived the heart condition and grew into an excellent student. ”The doctors told me he would be developmentally delayed first. They even stated that he might have to have heart surgery again. He is our miracle, ”His mother, Kia Harris, told Atlanta News.
He graduated from Chapel Hill High School, Georgia, United States with good grades. Reggis’s excellent performance earned him acceptance to more than 40 colleges and universities across the United States.

Reggis also received $1.6 million in scholarships. The scholarship offer he received also meant he would not have to foot any bills for his college or university education.
He stated that he never imagined being offered admission by several schools but was grateful for the opportunity. “I’m so blessed to have this opportunity, there were several schools at the top of my list,” he said.
He said he initially used the Common Black College Application, which allows students to apply to around 50 to 60 HBCUs all at once. After completing his first round of applications, Reggis then moved on to the Common App.

The Common App is a nonprofit that connects students to private and public colleges and universities. Once he finished the Common App, Harris noticed he was getting accepted into schools.
“After the acceptance letters started coming in, I just started applying to more and more schools on their websites by themselves to choose the school that was going to be the best fit for me,” Harris said.
Reggis said that being an excellent student and being able to maintain an honors grade came with a lot of sacrifices and hard work. ”It was a lot of sacrifices. There were a lot of nights I stayed up studying all night long,” he said.
Some of the schools that accepted him are highly sought-after institutions including the University of Georgia (UGA) and the University of Southern California (USC). Reggis’s parents stated that there are not enough words to describe how proud they are of their son cause he has been a fighter all his life.
Despite being an honors student who concentrates most of his time on his studies, Reggis also has time for extracurricular activities. He is a member of the school band, chess club, varsity track team, and National Honor Society.
He is also a member of his church choir and has a part-time job. “The hardest part for me was that I balanced staying on top of work but also that I maintained being a well-rounded person,” he said.
Reggis said he plans to pursue a course in Biology on a pre-med track at North Carolina A&T University with the hope of becoming a psychiatrist. “I’m looking forward to being able to adapt, to expand my mind, my learning and I can’t wait,” he said.
