AFRICA | 17-year-old, Dwight Moore made history as the first Black solo valedictorian of Christian Brothers High School in Tennessee, United States.
Graduating with an extraordinary 5.28 GPA, Moore earned the school’s top academic honor and secured admission into seven of the most prestigious universities in the country.
Moore's Story and How He Did It
Moore’s academic brilliance had already drawn national attention before his valedictorian achievement. In 2016, during his sophomore year, he scored a perfect 36 on the ACT, a rare accomplishment that placed him among the highest-performing students in the nation.
Beyond personal success, he demonstrated a commitment to service by organizing ACT/SAT workshops to help other students prepare for college entrance exams.
“It’s really important that people who have been given opportunities give back and give others the opportunities they were also granted,” Moore said.

In 2018, Moore secured the top academic spot at Christian Brothers High School, becoming its first solo African American valedictorian.
While acknowledging the historical significance, his family emphasized balance in how the milestone should be viewed.
His mother, Geneva Simpson-Moore, shared that although race should not be the sole focus, representation remains important because not every child has equal access to opportunity.
Moore was accepted into Yale University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Brown University, Duke University, and Vanderbilt University.
He ultimately chose to attend Stanford University, where he pursued studies in Computer Science and Economics.
Moore completed his undergraduate studies at Stanford and graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a minor in Mathematics.
Reflecting on his college experience, he shared:
“While the college experience may have been much different from what I expected, I’m coming out of it with the greatest friendships and memories one can ask for! One more degree to go!
