17 years after surviving deadly plane crash, young Nigerian Lady grows to earn bachelors and masters degrees at US university

Seventeen years after surviving the tragic Sosoliso plane crash, Kelechi Okwuchi has proved that hope can prevail. She has successfully obtained both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of St. Thomas, Texas, in the United States.

Kelechi Okwuchi is one of the two survivors in the Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crash that happened in Nigeria on December 10, 2005. The plane crash claimed 107 lives, 60 of which were her schoolmates from Loyola Jesuit College in Nigeria.

Kechi had third-degree burns in over 65% of her body and was given a 30% chance of survival after the crash. She was immediately air-lifted to Milpark Hospital in  South Africa for medical attention and treatment.

Later on, she was transferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas, United States where she underwent over a hundred reconstructive surgeries before her recovery.x

Upon her recovery, Kechi continued her education in the United States and bagged her bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas, Houston Texas in the United States with a first-class honors.

Kechi proceeded to earn her Masters of Business Administration from the same University of St. Thomas, Texas. She shared her achievements on her Instagram page with beautiful pictures and videos from her graduation ceremony.

Kechi did not allow her challenges to define her life’s journey. She built a platform for herself as a motivational speaker and singer in the United States

Kechi was a speaker at TedxEuston where she gave a talk titled ”Girls know thyself”. She also took part in the twelfth season of America’s Got Talent in 2017 as a singer and finished the competition as a finalist.

She participated in America’s Got Talent ”The Champions in 2019”, where the judge gave her the golden buzzer, sending her straight to the final. But in the final she didn’t come in the top 5.

Kechi hopes to keep serving as an inspiration to all burn survivors and bully-victims worldwide.

Shima Nixon was involved in a traumatic car accident. 2013 while in Nursing school at Pitt Community College which caused her to lose her left leg above the knee later on lost her right leg below the knee.
