18-year-old girl beats competitors to win $120,000 scholarship, set to bag Engineering degree at Canadian University

A brilliant 18-year-old girl named Ammielle Wambo Becker has outshined contestants worldwide to win a full scholarship worth 120,000 dollars to study for her bachelor’s degree at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Becker, from Brampton, Canada was awarded the Schulich Leader Scholarship worth 120,000 dollars. The grant supports students in completing an education in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) fields.

“We just had to read through the offer letter and make sure it was real because it didn’t feel real mom was really happy. It was a big shock and surprise for us — a life-changing moment,” Becker said.

“When I found out that the scholarship was for the program, I wanted at the school I wanted, it felt like everything was falling into place, and it didn’t feel real, And I felt like I would wake up in the next few days and realize I had misread it, or it was a mistake. But now I get to live my dream. And so, it’s very surreal,” she added.

Becker was one of the only five recipients chosen to study Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. She said she dreams of launching her tech startup at the intersection of biology and engineering.

She stated in an interview with the university that she hopes to explore building products that will positively impact people’s lives. “I want to get involved with the National Society of Black Engineers, Women in Engineering, UW Startups, and the Women’s Centre,” she said.

While in high school, she participated in extracurricular activities including being a swimming instructor, a freelance writer, and a teen advisor for Girl Up. She also led her school’s newspaper club, and organized a regional STEM conference for elementary school students.


She graduated from Ecole Secondaire Jeune sans Frontieres High School. Becker also won a few hackathons and completed two internships as a student. 

Becker was chosen from a field of more than 1,400 students who applied for the scholarship. Every high school can nominate a student, and at least 100 scholarships are distributed each year to study at one of 20 universities.

Becker said she wants to be an entrepreneur adding that she plans to attend the University of Waterloo where she will pursue a degree in Systems design Engineering.

In a similar story, a brilliant young lady named Sashauna Perkins has outshined 40 competitors to win a full scholarship worth 20000 pounds to study for her master’s degree at Swansea University in the United Kingdom.

Perkins, from St. Andrews Jamaica, was awarded the full scholarship by Swansea University to study for a Master of Business Administration. She was the winner of the 20000 scholarship out of over 40 other competitors according to the university’s website.

The university said while all the applicants were exceptional, Perkins stood out with her unique and creative application which clearly outlined how she would use her degree to benefit the community in which she grew up. Read more about Perkins HERE.
