18-year-old girl wins $318,000 scholarship to Princeton University, set to bag bachelor’s degree

18-year-old, Mena Scatchard has been awarded a scholarship worth 318,000 dollars to study for her bachelor’s degree at Princeton University in the United States.

Mena, a student athlete from North Yorkshire village in the United Kingdom was awarded a scholarship to study for her bachelors degree at one of the Ivy League University, Princeton in the United States. 

She is one of the fastest young middle-distance runners in the United Kingdom. The scholarship will cover her tuition fees and accommodation for four years.

“I am really excited. It was quite a moment to get the official acceptance through,” she said. Mena said she will be studying for her bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts while at the university.

She mentioned that she will be studying and at the same time training at the university to build her athletic career.  While in high school, Mena was crowned Yorkshire Champion for three years and has been talent-spotted by England and British Athletics as a future sporting star.

Mena said she applied to Princeton University after hearing about the exceptional sports facilities, training, and competitions at United States universities. “It’s the best opportunity I could have at this time of life to develop my running and I’m confident I can make a lot of progress,” she said.

Though she impressed the university with her sporting record, Menahad took a four-and-a-half-hour exam to earn admission to the prestigious university.


She said she also had to study for aptitude tests required by the American educational system, at the same time as preparing for her A-level exams in chemistry, biology, and geography.

Mena’s mother, Brenda Scatchard who is also a former PE teacher, said the whole family is delighted and very proud of her achievement. She stated that they anticipate watching her in competition.

“Mena has done very well for herself and we are delighted for her. We’re looking forward to visiting her and to watching some Ivy League competitions,” she said.

In addition to all her flights, food, sports kit, and coaching being funded by the university Mena will be granted a personal spending allowance to ensure she remains debt-free. She stated that she is looking forward to the next chapter of her life with excitement.
