AMERICA | An 18-year-old girl named Mariah Jones has earned a life-changing opportunity after securing a full scholarship to study Astrophysics in the United States through the prestigious QuestBridge National College Match program.
QuestBridge provides full four-year scholarships to outstanding students from low-income backgrounds, covering tuition, housing, and other academic expenses at top partner institutions.
Through the program, Mariah matched with Vassar College in New York, where she will begin her undergraduate studies in Astrophysics.
Mariah's Story and How She Did It
Mariah, who grew up in Pittsburgh, faced significant challenges during her childhood. She, alongside her mother and older sisters, once lived at the Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh after leaving an abusive household.
Despite the hardship, she describes those years as transformative, recalling how the shelter provided a peaceful environment that helped her family begin rebuilding their lives.
After leaving the shelter, the family moved into temporary housing before eventually settling in a townhouse, where Mariah spent much of her childhood growing alongside her siblings.
Even amid difficult circumstances, she managed to have joyful childhood experiences and learned important life lessons.

During high school at Baldwin High School, Mariah continued pushing forward academically while dealing with challenges that included the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
Still, she refused to let obstacles derail her ambitions.
Her journey toward the scholarship began when she joined College Point, a free college advising program offered through the College Board for students from moderate-to-low-income families.
There, she met an advisor, Caitlin Singleton, who encouraged her to apply for QuestBridge. At first, Mariah doubted herself and did not think she was qualified.
However, encouraged by her advisor, she decided to try anyway. After completing the demanding application process, she was selected as a finalist and allowed to rank her preferred partner universities.
And finally, she received the life-changing news that she had matched with Vassar College. Recalling the moment, she said her voice shook as she opened the results online and saw celebratory confetti appear on the screen.
Until then, she had no clear plan for how she would afford college. Seeing the match confirmed, she felt her dreams were finally becoming real.
Despite the many challenges she faced growing up, Mariah credits her strong support system of family and friends for helping her stay focused.
She also explained that her passion for Astrophysics started at a young age. Whenever she was bored, she would watch documentaries and videos about space and the ocean.
Over time, outer space fascinated her the most, particularly Jupiter, which became her favorite planet due to its size and beauty. Even while still in high school, Mariah began building research experience.
Encouraged by her principal, she reached out to several professors seeking opportunities. One of them, Dr. Brett Andrews at the University of Pittsburgh, responded and offered her a chance to gain early exposure to research, giving her valuable experience before college.
Now preparing to begin her studies, Mariah hopes her story will inspire other young women and students facing uncertainty about their future.
”Never doubt your potential, even when you cannot see it yourself. Sometimes, others see your strengths before you do.” Mariah said. She encourages students to pursue opportunities boldly, reminding them they have nothing to lose by trying.
