19-year-old girl wins $300,000 scholarship to US university, set to study Physics

A 19-year-old girl named Dinh Thi Huong Thao has won a scholarship worth 300,000 dollars to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.

Thao is a Vietnamese native who was awarded a scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge in the United States. The young teen has always been exceptionally brilliant.

She won the Gold Medal at the International Physics Olympiad in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, she also received the special award for “Highest Achieving Female Student in Asia” from the Asia-Pacific Physics Association.

Thao was the only female student among three people honored with the Third-class Labor Medal personally awarded by the Prime Minister of Chinese in 2019. In addition to her impressive academic achievements, she also participated in volunteer activities at the Mottainai event “Give love, receive happiness” organized by the Women’s Newspaper for the fourth time.

Thảo is currently a student majoring in Physics at the University of Science, Hanoi. She was one of the 10 outstanding young faces of 2016 honored by the Central Youth Union. The principal of Le Hong Phong High School, Thảo’s former secondary school, Mr. Vũ Đức Thọ described her as having a special talent in Physics and an excellent learning spirit.

“She excels in all subjects, especially in Physics, even surpassing her senior classmates. I notice that Thảo has a very serious learning spirit, intelligence, diligence, self-study ability, and good reading comprehension. Especially, she has a special passion for Physics,” Tho said.

Thao mentioned that besides studying, she enjoys listening to music and reading books. “I read all kinds of genres: literature, novels, detective stories but I haven’t been impressed by any specific book,” she said.


After Thao won the Gold Medal in Physics at India’s Olympics, she told the press that she had no intention of studying at a domestic university. “Getting a scholarship to study abroad is my dream. I haven’t thought about a specific career, for now, I want to study fields related to Physics,” she said.
