A 20-year-old student named Isaiah Hand has made history at Tuskegee University, United States ,becoming the first-ever certified pilot since the university’s founding in 80 years.
Tuskegee University, famously known as the training ground of the legendary Tuskegee Airmen of World War II, had long discontinued its aviation program.
But after a federal grant and approval in 2024, the university revived its Aviation Science degree, blending academics with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)\ certified pilot training.
For Isaiah, a first-generation college student from Florida, this journey was personal, disciplined, and fueled by an unshakable dream. He spent his summers in rigorous 12-week training sessions at Moton Field, and his effort paid off as he earned a private pilot license.
“There is no other feeling like it,” he reflected after passing his license check ride.
Isaiah stated that his achievement required more than technical skills. It demanded sacrifice and resilience. He often skipped vacations to stay in the cockpit, working tirelessly toward his instrument rating, commercial license, and multi-engine certification.
Beyond his love for flying, he was also an active member on campus. Isaiah is a section leader in the university’s Marching Crimson Pipers Band, balancing music, academics, and aviation with extraordinary dedication.
Tuskegee University President, Dr. Mark A. Brown, praised Isaiah for his achievement describing his milestone as both historic and symbolic.
“Confident, excited, poised, and ready to tackle the most complex problems our world has to offer. Like Isaiah, our students are excited about our Aviation Science Degree Program and ready to continue the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen and serve our nation,” he said.
Now with his first certification secured, Isaiah is looking ahead. He looks forward to earning higher licenses and leading in the aviation industry.
