A 23-year-old Nigerian man named Adeogun Joshua graduated from the Federal University of Technology Akure, Nigeria as a Civil engineer after studying for 7 straight years at the university.
Joshua earned his bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Federal University of Technology Akure, Nigeria after 7 years instead of the normal academic timeline of 5 years due to several challenges.
He obtained the degree with a 4.53 first-class grade stating that earning the academic milestone with an excellent grade is a huge success for him. Joshua said he did not expect to graduate excellently being that he was distracted in his first year at the university.
However, Joshua achieved a surprisingly high grade point average of 4.62 and a first-class honor in the first semester of his first year which he said motivated him and increased his focus in his studies.

Joshua said though he dropped out the following semester, the memory of his high-grade point continued to inspire him with the belief that with more determination, he could achieve even greater success upon graduation.
He mentioned that he was motivated by his uncle to pursue a career path in civil engineering. Joshua said his uncle, a well-established civil engineer with his own construction company was always hardworking which inspired him.
”As a child, seeing him doing well as a civil engineer made me admire him. He was always so hardworking. I knew his line of work was what I wanted to get involved in. His work pattern just seemed fascinating to me,” he said.
Joshua further stated that graduating with first-class grades is a testimony because he faced multiple academic strikes during the academic journey, which caused delays in the completion of the five-year course, extending it to seven years.
He said despite not failing any courses or having carryovers, the strikes resulted in extended breaks between semesters, disrupting the flow of his studies. But during these breaks, Joshua said he found ways to stay productive and gain practical experience in civil engineering.
Joshua said the unpredictability of the length of these academic strikes made it challenging to stay focused and motivated. He added that returning to school after long breaks to write exams was difficult and required resilience and the support of his faith to keep going.
He expressed his gratitude to his parent for the foundation they laid for him which helped his study path. Joshua also mentioned that self-motivation also helped him through the academic journey.
Advising other undergraduate students, Joshua urged them not to postpone or delay tasks that they can complete today. He told them to avoid procrastination to improve their productivity and overall well-being better.
