25-year-old African lady bags PhD in Geography, sets record as university’s first black female doctor of science

A 25-year-old African lady named Nomhle Ngwenya has made history as the first black woman to earn a Doctorate in Science after she bagged a Ph.D. in Geography at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.

Nomhie, a South African made history by becoming the first black woman and the youngest student ever at the University of Michigan to graduate with a Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Sciences at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa.

She obtained a bachelor’s degree with honors grade (cum-laude) in Geography and Environmental Sciences and another¬† Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Geography and Sociology at the same University of the Witwatersrand.¬†

Due to her outstanding performance during her bachelor’s program, she was promoted to do a PhD in the Faculty of Science. “My PhD journey has taught me resilience, passion and the importance of determination in achieving one’s goals,” she said,

Nohmie stated that with the support and guidance of her supervisor, she took on a very big project looking at innovative financial mechanisms in the bond market and how they could play a role in financing the low-carbon transition in South Africa.

She said her goal is to have a generational impact where through her hard work and determination she leaves a legacy of difference. Nohmie added that it could be having created a platform where more black females are inspired to be in STEM research.
