34-year-old Nigerian actress, Omowunmi Dada becomes professor at US university, sets record

A 34-year-old Nigerian actress named Omowunmi Dada has assumed the role of a resident professor at the University of Michigan in the United States of America.

Omowunmi Dada is a Nigerian Actress, a voice-over artist,  presenter, and model. She was named one of the 2023 Global Artists in Residence at the African Studies Center (ASC) at the University of Michigan, United States.

She shared her achievement on Instagram stating how honored she is to be a part of the program. The Global Artist in Residence program was established through a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education and administered by ASC in collaboration with the Department of Afro-American and African Studies.

The program is run by the University’s African Studies Center (ASC) and the Department of Afro-American and African Studies (DAAS). Omowunmi said she will be working with DAAS language instructors in developing audio-visual materials for teaching African languages.

She added that she will be engaging with the broader University of Michigan (U-M) campus community and also engage with elementary, middle, and high school students and teachers in Southeast Michigan.

Omowunmi will also make presentations about Nollywood and African filmmaking at events organized in partnership with various U-M school departments and local organizations while educating the next generation about Nigerian culture.

Commenting on the program, The director of ASC, Director Omolade Adunbi described Omowunmi as a phenomenal actor whose presence in the movie industry in Nigeria and Africa has helped introduce a new flair to how we understand Nollywood and filmmaking on the continent.


Omowunmi said that she is excited to engage with faculty, staff, and students at the University of Michigan, sharing the rich tapestry of African culture and the incredible journey of the Nigerian movie industry, which she is proud to be a part of.

Omowunmi bagged her bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. She stated that she is honored to be the Global Artist in Residence, representing Nollywood, one of Africa’s most vibrant film industries.
