An exceptional 57-year-old Surgeon, Dr. Andrea Hayes Dixon has set a new record at Howard University in the United States after being appointed as the first-ever black woman to serve as Dean of the institution’s College of Medicine.
Dr Andrea Hayes Dixon is expected to resume official duties on the 3rd of October, 2022, breaking the record as the first black woman to become Dean of the College of Medicine in the university’s 145-year-old history.
Dr Andrea Hayes Dixon started her higher academic journey with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion from Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. She afterwards accepted to work in a leukemia lab and thereafter gained a passion for Medicine, per Wikipedia.
She then enrolled at Geisel School of Medicine and earned her Doctor of Medicine (M.D) in 1991. Announcing her appointment as the first-ever black woman to become Dean of Howard University’s College of Medicine, University President Wayne A. I. Frederick, describes her as an incredible leader.

“I am overjoyed to have the honour of announcing that for the first time in the college’s 154-year history, a Black woman will serve as the dean of the Howard University College of Medicine,” he said.
“If you look at the data on women’s leadership in medicine, it shows there is still much progress to be made. With the appointment of Dr. Hayes Dixon, Howard University not only gains an incredible leader but we move the University and the field of medicine forward,” Fredrick added.
