AMERICA| An exceptional 84-year-old woman, Betty Sandison, has fulfilled her lifelong dream after earning a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in the United States.
Betty, from Renville, bagged her Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies at the University of Minnesota’s College of Continuing and Professional Studies. She told CBS News that she left her town in 1955 to go to college, and was the first person in her family.
She was studying to be a nurse in college and got her nursing license after a year, but continued to take college courses after that. However, Betty never finished her degree because she left college after she got married.
“I was about 25 credits, approximately 25-, 28 credits short,” she said. After raising her two daughters and working as a nurse for decades she eventually retired in 2013.

One day after her retirement, she was having lunch with her friends and they were talking about the things they had always wanted to do, and that’s when she decided she wanted to finish her degree and graduate from the University of Minnesota.
Shortly after lunch, she enrolled in classes at the University of Minnesota in 2018. She said the school has changed a lot since she was last there, adding that the campus is a lot bigger now she needed a lot of help with using the computers.
The COVID-19 pandemic made it even harder for Betty to continue studying because her classes moved online. She had to drop the two classes she was doing online till she enrolled in physical classes.
“You need to do what you want to do or what your goals are. Don’t let anybody stop you,” she said. Betty said she does not know what’s next for her, but said she is already brainstorming a new goal she can work towards again.
