AMERICA | 16-year-old African-American boy beats colleagues to emerge 3rd best student in High school, earns acceptance to 9 US universities.
16-year-old, Joe Faryean has beaten his colleagues beat his peers to emerge as the third-best graduating student at Martin Luther King High School in Detroit, USA.
Joe’s academic excellence earned him acceptance offers from nine prestigious universities across the United States. Born in Liberia and raised in both Ghana and the United States, his academic journey has been nothing short of remarkable.
In 2020, in addition to being the third-best student, Joe became the youngest graduate of his high school and the entire Detroit Public School System.

Joe’s father told the Detroit Free Press that his son’s intelligence became evident at a very young age and teachers in Ghana would usually refer to it.
“The teacher in Ghana, called me one day to tell me, ‘You’ve got to keep an eye on your son, you’ve got to take care of him. He’s very gifted. With other kids, you have to tell them to study. With him, I have to tell him, ‘You’ve got school in the morning, you have to go to bed,” Joe’s father said.
After enrolling in high school at age 12, Joe skipped two to three grades, and despite the adjustment period of moving to the United States, he quickly impressed his new teachers.
Graduating third out of 347 students with a near-perfect grade point average, Joe earned acceptance from nine prestigious colleges and universities.
He chose to attend Michigan State University, where he studied Neuroscience and focused on the cellular mechanisms of Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Continuing his academic excellence, Joe is now pursuing a PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania, without a master’s degree certificate.
