AMERICA | A young Black man named Tylik Thomas has defied the odds to graduate as valedictorian from the East River Academy inside Rikers Island, New York, in the United States.
He was among the 63 inmates who were declared high school graduates in the prison for the year 2025, an achievement rarely seen at Rikers Island.
Tylik's Story and How She Did It
Thomas, who is currently serving time for a non-violent weapons charge, stood before his classmates as a symbol of hope and change, proof that education can spark light even in the darkest places.
Among 63 graduates, his name rose to the top, not because his path was easy, but because he chose to fight for a different ending.
“In some of the harshest and roughest living conditions known to man, we found light in a place where darkness and negativity reign supreme,” Thomas said during his moving valedictory speech.
Families and correctional staff watched as men who were once labeled by their mistakes stepped forward as graduates.
The Principal, Tonya Threadgill, described the graduating class’s theme as “resilience.” She reminded them that coming to jail is not the end, but a chance to start over.
The East River Academy, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and Department of Corrections, gives inmates the opportunity to earn their high school diplomas and reclaim their futures.
For Thomas, the day was deeply personal. His uncle, Malcolm, watched with pride, saying, “Joy, happiness, I see so much of myself in him,” she said. Reflecting on his journey, Thomas urged others to learn from his experience:
“I should have done it way earlier. This is a long time coming — it’s finally came. Don’t waste your time, wasting your freedom,” he said.
Eight months from now, when Thomas completes his sentence, he will cross the same bridge that once brought him to Rikers, but this time, with a diploma in hand, purpose in his heart, and the determination to make his education count.
