AFRICA | An exceptional African Lady bags two PhD before 30-year-old, celebrates unique achievement.
An exceptional Ghanaian scholar named Akosua Konadu Boateng has achieved a remarkable milestone in academia by earning her second doctorate degree before the age of 30.
Akosua recently completed a PhD in Vision Science at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in the United States, a feat she proudly shared on TikTok.
This achievement follows her earlier success in earning a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana in 2019, where she graduated as the best clinical student of her cohort.

Akosua’s decision to pursue a PhD in Vision Science was driven by her desire to address vision-related challenges, particularly congenital cataracts. While cataracts can generally be managed through surgery, congenital cataracts often result in severe visual impairments, even with intervention.
Her research at UAB focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind congenital cataracts, with the hope that her findings will eventually translate into clinical solutions to help children affected by this condition.
During her time at UAB, Akosua excelled in her coursework, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA, and presented parts of her research at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Her achievements were recognized by the US Embassy in Ghana, further cementing her status as a trailblazer in her field.
Akosua shared that her journey has not been without challenges. After completing six years of rigorous training for her OD degree, she was often told to follow the “natural order” of settling down with a man and starting a family.
However, she remained steadfast in her belief that no one but herself could define her identity, limitations, or aspirations.
Sharing her achievement on LinkedIn, Akosua described earning her second PhD as a major milestone in her journey. She expressed gratitude to her mentors, colleagues, family, and friends for their unwavering support.
She gave special recognition to her mentor, Dr. Srivastava, and the Vision Science Graduate Program (VSGP) at UAB for their guidance and encouragement.
As Akosua closes this chapter of her academic journey, she remains deeply committed to advancing eye care and making meaningful contributions to the lives of patients. Her story is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of self-belief.
