A young African lady named Asha Chepkorir Sigei-Rono from Kenya, has defied poverty to become a renowned medical doctor in the United States.
Growing up in a poor home, Asha’s father worked as a taxi driver, while her mother ran a small food business to support the family. Despite financial struggles, her father was committed to ensuring his children received a good education.
When Asha was ready for high school, her father made an incredible sacrifice—he sold his taxi to pay for her education. However, he made it clear that he could only afford to support her until high school.
“We didn’t have much, but we had what was necessary.My fear was that my education would end at form four. Luckily, things worked out in different ways. Sometimes miracles happen,” she recalled.

Despite the hardships, Asha excelled in school. However, tragedy struck when she lost her mother, who was hit by a car while crossing the road on her way to buy food supplies for her business.
When Asha sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), she scored an A, an achievement that brought both joy and anxiety.
“I was so happy after scoring an excellent grade. But after the celebrations, my father, anxious, asked me, ‘Asha, how can you score an ‘A’ yet you know very well that we do not have money? Now what will I do,” she said.
“It wasn’t that my father was angry at me; it was more about what was unfolding before us. I had applied for an engineering course, but my father advised me to apply for a medical course,” she added.
Without funds for further education, Asha started working alongside her father in their small kiosk in the slum. She also took up a part-time teaching job at a private school to save for university fees.
One faithful day, an elderly man sought shelter from the rain at their kiosk. Asha served him tea, and as they conversed, he asked about her education. Upon hearing her story, the man helped her secure a full scholarship from James Finlay, a tea company.
This scholarship enabled Asha to pursue a medical degree at the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine.
After graduating, Asha interned at Kericho Hospital, where she was recognized as the best medical intern. “I wasn’t earning much, but I could support my siblings and my father. Helping people brought me joy,” she said.
In 2013, Asha married Denis Rono, a psychiatric nurse, and moved to the United States. She then pursued a Master’s degree in Clinical Informatics Management at Duke University, North Carolina.
Six years later, Asha applied for a pathology residency program at East Tennessee State University, followed by a one-year fellowship in hematopathology.
Today, Asha has achieved an extraordinary milestone—she has been appointed as the Chief Pathologist and Medical Director of the Iredell Memorial Laboratory in the United States.
