AFRICA | A young African Lady named Justine Akorfa Dagadu from the Agbogbloshie community in Accra, Ghana, has secured a fully funded scholarship worth $328,000 to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.
She will study Bioengineering and International Development at one of the world’s leading institutions, a remarkable achievement that makes her the first in her community to attend university.
The scholarship, valued at $82,000 per year over four years, covers all expenses, giving Justine the opportunity to pursue her academic dreams without financial barriers.
In a Facebook post, she reflected on her journey from a disadvantaged background to earning a place at MIT, proving that determination and perseverance can lead to extraordinary opportunities.

Justine, the eldest of three children, grew up in Agbogbloshie, an underprivileged area in Accra. Her father, a retired driver, and her mother, who sells local foods, worked hard to provide her with the best education possible.
Despite the challenges of living in a community with limited amenities, Justine’s parents always supported her aspirations, inspiring her to strive for a better future. Driven by a passion to address the inequalities she witnessed growing up, Justine excelled academically.
She attended Keta Senior High School (KETASCO) in Ghana, where she studied General Science and graduated in the top 1% of her class in 2019. Despite her academic achievements, her family’s financial situation initially made further education seem unattainable.
However, in 2021, Justine joined the Young Achievers Foundation Ghana (YAF Ghana) Scholars Program, which helped her realize her full potential and provided the support she needed to pursue her dreams.
Through the program, she not only found hope but also earned the opportunity of a lifetime. She stated that her acceptance to MIT marks a groundbreaking achievement—not only for her but for her entire community.
She hopes her story will inspire other children from similar backgrounds to break through the barriers imposed by poverty and lack of opportunity.
With her degree, Justine aims to contribute to solving problems related to health and economic development in developing countries. She hopes to provide children from disadvantaged communities like hers with a better chance at success.
Getting into MIT is not just a blessing for me,” Justine said. “It’s a chance for every child in my community to believe that they can break down the barriers and aspire to greater heights,” she added.
Justine expressed her gratitude to the YAF Ghana Scholars Program, the MIT Alumni in Ghana, and the KETASCO Past Students Association in Ghana and North America for supporting her and making her dream come true.
