AFRICA | After scoring 8As in WAEC, brilliant African man bags first-class degree in Economics and Finance from UK university, wins scholarship to Oxford.
A brilliant African man named Thomas Amoani, who scored 8As in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) exam, has earned a first-class bachelor’s degree in Economics and Finance from Brunel University London.
He also secured a scholarship to continue his studies at the prestigious University of Oxford.
Thomas, from Ghana in West Africa, shared the achievement on his Linkedin adding that he also won the university’s prize for achieving the highest overall average mark in Economics and Finance.

Additionally, Thomas said he is proud to have scored an A in all of his course modules. He enrolled in the university through a scholarship he won in his home country after he achieved academic excellence.
Thomas made many news headlines in 2020 after he aced the West African Examination Council (WAEC) examination by scoring A’s in all the eight subjects registered.
His performance earned him a scholarship opportunity from President Akufo-Addo of Ghana to study at Brunel University London.
Getting to the United Kingdom, Thomas however maintained academic excellence and he emerged as the overall best student in his Department shortly after resuming at the university.
Reflecting on his journey, Thomas attributed his success to hard work, dedication, and perseverance. “The journey was challenging but equally rewarding,” he said, adding that his late nights of study, rigorous analysis, and countless hours of research had all paid off.
Thomas expressed gratitude to his family and friends for their unwavering support, which he described as his “pillars of strength.” He also thanked his parents for their blessings and support, which he referred to as his “guiding light” throughout his academic journey.
Additionally, Thomas thanked his dissertation supervisor, whose invaluable guidance helped him navigate the complexities of his research. His dissertation focused on the effects of monetary policy on the macroeconomy, using empirical evidence from both the UK and the US.
He also expressed his appreciation for his professors and lecturers, whose expertise and dedication played a crucial role in his intellectual development.
Thomas extended his gratitude to Brunel University London and its Pathway College for fostering an environment of academic rigor and innovation, which he credited for helping him achieve his goals.
Looking ahead, Thomas will continue his academic journey at the University of Oxford, where he has been awarded the African Economics Scholarship by St Antony’s College. He will be pursuing a Master of Philosophy in Economics.
Excited for the next chapter, Thomas shared that he is eager to contribute to his community and pursue his passion for creating sustainable macroeconomic solutions.
