AFRICA | Alex Mwaura, a high school dropout from Kenya, has defied odds to earn a bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Embu, Kenya.
Born in 2000 as the fourth of six children in a single-parent household, Alex faced extreme poverty throughout his childhood. He shared his story with the Kenya Times, recounting an upbringing filled with hardship
“Poverty was a constant companion during my formative years, and our life resembled that of nomads as we moved from place to place,” Alex said.
Alex attended multiple primary schools, consistently excelling as a top student despite his circumstances. However, in December 2011, his family faced a major crisis that forced them to relocate. This disruption marked the beginning of his struggle with education.

”We moved with no furniture or utensils, and my mother found herself without employment. As a result, my sister, Margaret Muthoni (second born), had to drop out of school in Form Two,” he said.
In 2013, his family moved again, and we rented a small house for Sh300 per month. Encouraged by his mother’s unwavering belief in education, Alex returned to school, determined to complete Standard Eight.
Despite numerous challenges, including going without food or relying on boiled maize for meals, Alex sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams in 2014, scoring 297 marks.
Unable to afford secondary school fees, Alex turned to crushing ballast at a quarry, earning a meager amount to support his family. Nevertheless, life was still challenging until one faithful day he met someone who helped change his life for the better.
”While in the car, I mustered the courage to share my desire to attend high school with Mr Muchoki, even though he did not know me well. I told him I aspired to join high school, but my mother lacked the means,” he said.
Muchoki not only secured Alex’s admission to Swani Secondary School but also provided him with a full uniform and essentials.
Alex embraced the opportunity with determination, topping his first exams with an A-. His love for learning reignited, setting him on a path of academic excellence.
Tragedy struck again in 2018, during Alex’s final year of secondary school when his mother passed away. Despite the devastating loss and lack of family support, the Kihiu Mwiri community, led by Mr. Muchoki, came together to assist Alex and his siblings.
With unwavering resilience, Alex completed secondary school, earning a C+ and securing direct entry to university. He was admitted to the University of Embu, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Education Arts, specializing in Business Studies and Christian Religious Education.
On September 15, 2023, Alex graduated with a Second Class Honors Upper Division degree, a testament to his hard work and perseverance. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed deep gratitude to those who supported him along the way.
”I owe a debt of gratitude to my teachers, especially Mr Francis Ndungu, who consistently encouraged me to strive for excellence,” he said.
