AFRICA | A brilliant young African man, Alfred Nyaga, has achieved remarkable academic success after earning his Master of Laws (LLM) degree with Distinction from Brunel University London, United Kingdom.
Alfred’s achievement was made possible through the fully funded Commonwealth Shared Scholarship.
The Commonwealth Scholarship is one of the UK’s most competitive and prestigious government-funded awards, covering full tuition, travel expenses, and a monthly living stipend of £1,781.
It provides outstanding students from Commonwealth nations the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies in the UK, focusing on advancing leadership and global development.
Alfred's Story and How He Did It
Alfred’s academic journey began in 2020 at Mount Kenya University, Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. Through years of dedication, and faith, he graduated in 2023 with First-Class Honours, emerging as the Best Graduating Student in his class.
Reflecting on that milestone, Alfred described his success as “a testament to God’s grace, consistency, resilience, and dedication.”
His commitment to excellence extended beyond the classroom. During his undergraduate studies, he engaged in leadership roles, legal research, and community service that strengthened both his academic and professional grounding.
After his undergraduate studies, Alfred joined FMC Advocates LLP, a leading law firm in Kenya, where he gained hands-on experience in legal research, corporate transactions, and diverse practice areas.
This professional exposure played a pivotal role in shaping his my perspective and strengthening his Commonwealth Scholarship application.
In 2024, Alfred was selected among the few Kenyans awarded the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship, jointly funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and Brunel University London.
The award gave him the opportunity to pursue an LLM in Human Rights, Artificial Intelligence Policy, and Data Protection & Privacy Law at Brunel Law School — a program that aligns closely with his passion for digital rights and technology regulation.
At Brunel, Alfred distinguished himself once again. His academic journey was marked by exceptional achievement, he earned Distinctions in seven out of eight modules, and his dissertation titled “Data Retention Complexities in the Age of Generative AI: Rethinking Compliance with the Right to be Forgotten” also received a Distinction.
He described his master’s experience as “intellectually enriching, transformative, and deeply rewarding,” expressing gratitude to his supervisor for providing insightful feedback and mentorship that shaped his academic growth and research excellence.
Alfred also expressed profound appreciation to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) and Brunel University London for funding his studies and making his dream a reality.
“I am deeply grateful to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK and Brunel University of London for generously funding my studies and making this dream come true,” he wrote.
As he embarks on the next chapter of his career, Alfred remains passionate about contributing to discussions surrounding digital rights, privacy, and AI regulation.
