Young African mother bags PhD at German University, makes family proud

AFRICA | A determined young African woman named Evelyn Asante-Yeboah has achieved an extraordinary milestone by earning a Doctorate in Sustainable Landscape Development from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany.

Taking to LinkedIn to share her journey, Evelyn reflected on the challenges she faced and the lessons she learned, emphasizing perseverance, resilience, and faith as the driving forces behind her success.

Evelyn pursued her PhD as a single mother living in a foreign country, East Germany, where support was scarce. Despite limited assistance, she remained hopeful and determined, overcoming numerous obstacles along the way.

One of her significant challenges was financial setbacks. When her scholarship ended unexpectedly halfway through her program, Evelyn secured a job at a research institution to fund her studies.

She managed this while balancing motherhood and her demanding academic workload. The intense academic demands were another major hurdle.

To earn her PhD, Evelyn had to publish three full papers in highly ranked journals—a rigorous requirement, especially given the complexities of life and the long waiting times for publication acceptances.

Her research, titled “Towards multifunctional and sustainable land use in mosaic landscapes: an integrated socio-spatial assessment of land use and land cover transitions in a mosaic landscape of southwestern Ghana,” required extensive fieldwork in Africa.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns disrupted her data collection, forcing her to find creative solutions to complete her research.

From October 2019 to December 2024, Evelyn confronted these challenges head-on, demonstrating resilience and determination to achieve her goal. She hopes her story will serve as a powerful message for women, especially mothers.

“Motherhood is NOT a barrier to your dreams. Being a single mother does not diminish your worth or capability. Stay focused, trust in God, and believe in yourself. Seek support when needed and surround yourself with positive, forward-thinking individuals,” she said.

She expressed deep gratitude to those who supported her throughout her journey, acknowledging that God’s help was undeniable in her success.

Evelyn hopes her story inspires others, especially women, to embrace resilience and faith, reminding them that no dream is too big to achieve.
