After four years of admission delay, this man defies odds and rose to become professor at US university

AFRICA | A brilliant Nigerian man named Adekunle Aina rose from waiting four long years for university admission to becoming an Assistant Professor at California State University, one of the largest and most prestigious public university systems in the United States.

His remarkable journey is a story of resilience, perseverance, and academic excellence that inspires students facing similar struggles.

Dr. Adekunle's story Story and How He Did It

Adekunle’s academic story began after high school, where he graduated with seven distinctions but could not secure university admission for four consecutive years.

Instead of giving up, Adekunle held on to his dream of higher education. His persistence finally paid off in 2009 when he was admitted to the University of Lagos to study Applied Physics.

However, his journey through university was not smooth. In his first year, tragedy struck—he lost his father, which left him struggling with food, housing, and financial stability. Despite these hardships, Adekunle remained determined to succeed.

He described those five years at university as the toughest period of his life, admitting that he came close to dropping out multiple times. Yet, he persevered and graduated in 2014 with First Class Honours, a record-breaking achievement that had not been seen in his department for years.

After graduation, Adekunle set his sights on pursuing advanced studies abroad. His first attempt was met with a series of rejections from universities overseas.

Not discouraged, he briefly enrolled for a master’s degree at the University of Lagos before leaving after one year. His breakthrough came when he gained admission to the University of Newfoundland, Canada, where he earned his Master of Science in Physics with the highest honours.

His exceptional performance earned him a Lifetime Fellowship from the School of Graduate Studies in 2018. That same year, Adekunle began his PhD in Physics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada—one of the top-ranked institutions in the world.

In 2023, he achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Black African-born person to earn a PhD in Physics at UBC, and the first in his family to reach such an academic height.

But even after earning his doctorate, the path forward had its challenges. Adekunle applied to hundreds of jobs, only to face repeated rejections. Still, he refused to let disappointment define him.

Later that year, his persistence was rewarded when he secured a lecturing position at Okanagan College, Canada, and soon after, his current role as an Assistant Professor at California State University.

Sharing his story on LinkedIn, Adekunle emphasized that challenges are temporary, but the determination to keep going is what truly defines success.

He encouraged young people, especially those facing delays, rejections, or financial struggles—to remain steadfast and never stop believing in their dreams.
