American movie icon, Angela Basset earns Doctorate degree in Arts at Spelman College

American actress, Angela Basset has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Fine Arts by Spelman College, Atlanta Georgia in the United States.

Angella Basset is known for her work in film and television since the 1980s. She is a celebrated, award-winning actress known for her portrayal of bold, empowered women in iconic films like What’s Love Got to Do With It?, Black Panther, Waiting To Exhale, and Malcolm X. 

She was awarded an honorary doctorate by Spelman College for her tremendous impact both on and off the screen. In addition to her honorary doctorate, Angela will also be the keynote speaker at the 2024 graduating class of the college.

The president of Spelman College, Helene D. Gayle, M.D., MPH described Angela as a critically acclaimed actor and director. She stated that the legendary actor will inspire and encourage a new generation of Black women graduating and heading to make their mark on the world.

“Spelman College is honored to have acclaimed actress and director Angela Bassett bring words of inspiration to our graduating Class of 2024. Her work has had a tremendous impact both on and off the screen and serves as an example for our students to lead in their own spaces,” Helene said.

Angela has received different notable awards as an actress including 16 NAACP Image Awards, two Golden Globes, and a BET Award. In 2024, She received an honorary Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards.

She had earlier received an honorary doctorate of fine arts degree from Yale University, her alma mater, in 2018 marking her third degree from the university according to AFROTECH.


Angella graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies in 1980 at Yale University after which she proceeded to study acting at the Yale School of Drama. She also obtained a Master of Fine Arts at the same university in 1983.

In 2020, Angela became the first Black recipient to receive the Yale Undergraduate Lifetime Achievement Award and was also awarded another honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Old Dominion University in 2022.

In the span of her 38-year career, Angela Bassett earned a record after she successfully renegotiated her salary for featuring in the TV series “9-1-1” to make her earn a whopping $450,000 per episode in 2022.

According to Vanity Fair, her $450,000 salary is historic and could now make her become one of the highest-paid black actresses in network television.

The Outlet highlighted that the roles of Angela Bassett in the movie 9-1-1 encompasses more than acting as she is also an Executive Producer of the movie. “For Oscar-nominated Bassett, it encompasses other services beyond acting. She was involved in the development of ‘9-1-1,’ which Ryan Murphy created for her,” it noted.

The $450,000 per episode salary however places her as the highest-paid African-American actress in TV history. With a net worth of $25 million as of 2021, Angela Bassett is one of the richest actresses in the United States.
