AFRICA | A brilliant lady named Aminata Jaiteh from The Gambia has successfully earned a master’s degree in Gender and Development Studies from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom(UK).
Her academic journey was made possible through the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, a fully funded program supported by the UK government and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
In 2023, she moved to the UK to pursue her postgraduate studies, an opportunity that marked the beginning of both an exciting and challenging chapter in her life. A year later, she graduated from the university’s Institute of Development Studies, fulfilling a long-held dream.
Reflecting on her experience, Aminata shared on Linkedin that studying in the UK was one of the most demanding yet rewarding challenges she had ever faced.

She recalled moments of homesickness, adapting to extreme weather conditions, and even losing two major assignments just a day before their submission due to a laptop crash. Through it all, she relied on resilience, faith, and hope to overcome every setback.
Her success, she believes, is proof of what is possible when hard work meets determination and self-belief. More than just an academic achievement, it represents perseverance and the undeniable strength of women—a spirit she proudly embodies.
Looking back, she cherishes the memories of engaging in deep feminist discussions, rushing to early morning lectures, anxiously awaiting grade releases, and celebrating victories, all while exploring the beauty of the UK.
Now, as a proud Chevening alumna, she celebrates not just her degree but also her growth as a feminist and a Gender and Development Specialist from the world’s top-ranked institution for Development Studies.
