Young Blind man emerges best graduating student at University of Ghana with 4.00/4.00CGPA in Political Science, celebrates success

AFRICA | A brilliant young man named Ephraim Ayeh Oracca-Tetteh, has defied the odds to emerge as the overall best graduating student at the University of Ghana, despite facing the challenge of visual impairment.

He achieved a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.00, earning a first-class degree in Political Science, Philosophy & Classics, and Archaeology.

After he completed his secondary school education, Ephraim gained admission to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in 2017 to study Painting and Sculpture.

However, a health condition led to a gradual loss of his eyesight, making it impossible for him to take up the admission.

Determined to continue his education, he sought support from the Ghana Blind Union, where he received training in Assistive Technology—any equipment, software, or product that helps people with disabilities perform daily tasks.

Having learnt how to use the tools, Ephraim applied to the University of Ghana in 2021 and was admitted to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Philosophy & Classics, and Archaeology.

From the very beginning of his studies at the University of Ghana, Ephraim maintained academic excellence. In his second year, he won the Alumni Prize for Best Level 200 Humanities Student at the 2021/2022 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards.

Beyond academics, Ephraim is a strong advocate for inclusion and student welfare. He served as Organizing Secretary and Public Relations Officer for the Campus Association of Students with Special Needs, championing the rights of students with disabilities.

Additionally, he played a key role in student-led academic initiatives and volunteered at Radio Univers, actively contributing to campus life.

Ephraim’s commitment to education also extended to teaching and mentorship. As a facilitator for a joint project by the Ghana Education Service (GES), T-TEL, and KTI, he trained senior high school teachers on how to integrate technology into their teaching methods.

Looking ahead, Ephraim aspires to become an academic specializing in human rights and inclusion, using his experiences and expertise to advocate for a more inclusive society.
