AMERICA | 17-year-old boy gains admission to US Georgia Tech, set to become a Mechanical Engineer.
Max Pacheco, a 17-year-old senior at South Forsyth High School, has achieved a lifelong dream by earning admission to the prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta.
From as early as seventh grade, Max had set his sights on Georgia Tech, a university known for its rigorous engineering programs, and in 2020, his dream became a reality.
After submitting his application, Max eagerly awaited the decision. In January 2020, he checked the university’s admissions portal and was thrilled to find that he had been accepted.

One of the first people Max wanted to share the news with was his favorite teacher, Dr. Gloria Green, who had written a letter of recommendation on his behalf.
Dr. Green, an Advanced Placement Spanish teacher known for her dedication to students, played a key role in Max’s high school journey. Wanting to thank her personally, Max surprised her at school with the news of his acceptance and presented her with a bouquet.
“So this past Saturday I was blessed to have been admitted into @GeorgiaTech. Today in school I surprised Dr. Green, one of the best teachers I’ve had and the teacher who wrote my recommendation, with the news. This was her reaction,” Max said.
“When I told her I got into Georgia Tech, she just went nuts. She started hugging me, she started dancing, and it really made me tear up because you can really see and feel how much she cared about me. She knew that it was my dream to go to Tech and how hard I worked for it,” he added.
Dr. Green, who has been a teacher for 27 years, was equally moved by Max’s appreciation. “It felt like my own child was going to college,” Dr. Green said.
“I was very, very happy. It felt like my own child was going to college. The teachers are told to invest in the children and to always think of them with intention. I invested in my children and I got yellow roses in return,” she added.
She went on to praise Max’s work ethic and character, highlighting how he excelled not only academically but also in forming meaningful connections with his peers and teachers.
Max expressed his deep gratitude for Dr. Green and the supportive community at South Forsyth High School.
“Not only does Dr. Green teach the class very well, but by connecting with her students, she really knows how to fill the needs of each individual student. At that moment, I just felt like her son or something, and it made me feel really special,” he said.
Looking ahead, Max is set to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech, taking his first major step toward a future career in engineering.
“This has been my goal for so long, and now that it’s happening, I’m more excited than ever to dive into what I’m passionate about,” he said.
