A brilliant lady named Kiara Gilbert has been awarded a scholarship to study for two master’s degrees at two universities in the United Kingdom.
Kiara, a teen from North Carolina in the United States, was awarded the Marshall Scholarship to pursue two years of graduate study at any university of her choice in the United Kingdom. She is among 46 awardees for the 2021 cohort.
The Marshall Scholarship seeks to promote strong relations between the United Kingdom and the United States by offering intellectually distinguished young Americans the opportunity to develop their abilities as future leaders.
The scholarship covers the cost of two years of graduate study in the United Kingdom at a university of the recipient’s choice. Kiara graduated from Princeton University, United States with a bachelor’s degree in African American studies and a certificate in humanistic studies.

Kiara said for her first year of graduate study, she will pursue a Master of Philosophy in Criticism and Culture at the University of Cambridge and for the second year, a Master of Philosophy in Political thought and Intellectual theory at SOAS University of London.
She plans to use the degrees to follow her deep passion for making both canonical and non-traditional philosophies accessible to marginalized communities as she is the first in her family to graduate from the university.
“I was immensely grateful and more than a little overwhelmed upon receiving confirmation of the Marshall Scholarship. Being first-generation, low-income, and a proud student activist, I know that this award comes amid much hardship,” Kiara said.
”I can only hope to use the Marshall and its available resources to further my commitment to justice and equity within disenfranchised communities,” she added. Kiara said as a Marshall Scholar she is excited to directly engage with the legacies of Black British theorists, academics, and activists.
“I hope to grow as a race theorist and philosopher and to further entrench myself within political philosophy. I’m also excited to engage in British movements for racial justice and prison abolition, as I know these are conversations unfolding globally,” she said.
Aside from being a Marshall scholar, she has also been named a KPMG Scholar, National Horatio Alger Scholar, Ron Brown Scholar, and a Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America (LEDA) Scholar.
