Brilliant Nigerian man who failed to get admission 3 times finally bags first-class in Linguistics, wins 10 awards as best student

A brilliant Nigerian man named Adegboyega Kolade has won the award of the overall best graduating student at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria after he bagged a Linguistics degree with a first-class.

Kolade obtained his bachelor’s degree in Linguistics with first-class honors at Olabisi Onabanjo University. He won the award of the Overall Best Graduating Student in the university’s Faculty of Arts and Department of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages.

Aside from being awarded the overall best student of his faculty and department, Kolade also received eight notable awards making all of the awards he received ten in total. He stated that the academic journey is a chapter of his life filled with trials, resilience, and, triumph.

Kolade stated that the achievement embodies the essence of perseverance, determination, and unwavering faith in the face of whatever struggle. He said the journey was not a smooth sail but filled with a series of challenges and setbacks that tested him over and over.

He mentioned that he applied for admission three times, and waited at home for four years before he could finally secure an admission to the university. Kolade said with each rejection, he could have succumbed to despair or accepted defeat as his fate but he was determined to defy the odds and carve out his path to success.

He said with resilience and unwavering determination, he embarked on his academic journey channelling every setback he faced into an opportunity for growth and learning. Some of the awards he received were the J.S.A. Odujinrin Memorial Prize Award, and the Oba Sonoiki Prize Award.

Kolade was also awarded the E. Akinwale Akinsanya Prize Award, Dipo Dina Prize Award as the Overall Best Graduating Student, Faculty of Arts, Al-Jazaau Society Prize Award, Professor Kamaldeen Balogun Prize Award Professor Afolabi Soyode’s Prize Award and the Ogun State Government Governorship Scholarship Prize for Best Graduating Students.


Aside from his academic excellence, Kolade participated in different extracurriculars. He mentioned that he started an undergraduate tutorial that produced the top 10 best students across each set.

He said he was also a part of the student union government as a two-timer senator of the 32nd and 33rd hallowed Chambers. Kolade served as a class representative for five years, faculty governor, and general class governor for the GNS course in 100-200 levels.

He stated that he co-founded a non-governmental organization that aimed at giving clarity to students on education beyond the classroom. BRAINPOWER EDUCATIONAL NETWORK and built various skills as a student.

Kolade expressed his gratitude to all those who have supported him along the journey, especially his family, friends, mentors, and professors. He said their faith in him has been what has been guiding him through the darkest of nights and illuminating the path to success.

He said that as he steps into the next chapter of his life, he carries with him the lessons learned and the memories forged along the remarkable academic journey adding that though there might be challenges, he is ready to face them with confidence, knowing that within him lies the strength to overcome any obstacle.

Kolade said he hopes his story will serve as an inspiration and motivation for others who may be facing similar challenges. He also encourages them to pursue their dreams despite the obstacles they may encounter.
