A brilliant Nigerian man named Alex Adegboye who had reading challenges growing up has defied the odds to earn a successful academic career, He bagged a bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees in Accounting.
Alex took to Likedin to celebrate his achievement of earning a doctorate in accounting at Covenant University. Narrating his story, he stated that growing up, he had dyslexia and would not have imagined owning a doctorate certificate.
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding).
Alex earned a Ph.D in Accounting with a specialization in Taxation, Governance, and Development in the Global South from Covenant University. Despite his reading challenges, he fought hard to become an academic scholar.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Accounting at Bowen University after which he proceeded to take an advanced course at the University of Ibadan, Nigerian before he proceeded to Bowen University for a master’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, and Finance.
Alex stated that earning a doctorate has been a transformative experience, pushing her to overcome challenges and grow into a lifelong scholar. He said his research focuses on issues with a global reach, aiming to create a lasting impact beyond the academic sphere.
He said during his doctoral, he was able to publish in prestigious journals, knowing his work had the potential to resonate on a global scale and contribute to positive change.
Some of his recent publications are Public Sector Transparency and Sustainable Development: A Focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, Taxation, democracy, and Inequality, and Tax and Sustainable Development in Sub-Saharan Africa: Beyond Accountability and Responsiveness.
Driving information communication technology for tax revenue mobilization in Sub-Saharan Africa, Taxing Africa for inclusive human development: the mediating role of governance quality.
He expressed his gratitude to his parents, siblings, friends, and colleagues together with his mentor and professors for their guidance. Alex also thanked the community of the UNU-WIDER – United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research, Helsinki, for the Visiting PhD fellowship.
Alex said he is also thankful to the International Centre for Tax and Development/NRTN for their research training program which shaped his thesis work and also to V-Dem Institute and The World Bank, which provided databases that were utilized for his thesis.
He said he is looking forward to the next achievement and is open to research collaborations & postdoctoral Fellowships. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Covenant University, Nigeria.
