A brilliant Nigerian man named Iyadi Victor who graduated from university with a biochemistry degree has passed the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria(ICAN) remarkably, earning a certification as a Chartered Accountant.
Victor obtained his bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at Kogi State University, Nigeria. Sharing his achievement on Linkedin, he stated that he was eight months into the compulsory youth service year when he decided to take the professional course.
He stated that as a graduate of Biochemistry, he found that job opportunities in his field of study were scarce. Therefore, he decided to try taking the ICAN exams and pursue a career in accounting instead.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria(ICAN) is an organization that oversees the education and certification of professionals in the accounting field. The organization offers three stages of examinations that aspiring accountants must complete to become chartered accountants. These stages are Foundation, Skills, and Finals.

Starting the course, Victor said he found the explanations about debit and credit confusing and he was puzzled by the instruction to “debit the receiver and credit the giver” because, in his experience, the situation is vice versa.
”The debit & credit explanations were confusing. I found it weird at the time to be told “Debit the receiver and credit the giver”, because anytime someone sent me money, my account would be credited and anytime I spent money, my account would be debited,” he said.
Despite this confusion, he managed to complete all four foundation papers successfully. Victor said he was relieved and excited when he could move on to the next level, Skills, without any issues.
Victor said the second stage, Skill was challenging for him, unlike the foundation state. He said after every Performance Management(PM) class, he would feel like quitting. He added that there were times when he and his friends would wish for an examination to escape studying.
He said when the exams came, the PM exam was much easier than he had anticipated as the questions were familiar, but he did not prepare for the exam. Victor said he worked hard on other courses because he was taking six other exams alongside PM which was his least favourite.
”The PM questions were very similar to the ones we did in class, so I begged my brain to just remember anything from what we were taught. My brain told me “Guy, you can’t force me to give you what you didn’t give me before nau,” Victor said.
”I couldn’t solve a single calculation question so I did my best to attempt all the theory questions and left PM after an hour & 15 minutes. My thought process? “Instead of wasting time here on this PM, let me go and read for Audit”. Audit was sweet,” he added.
Victor mentioned that when he got the results, the reverse was the case as he passed the performance management exam alongside three other courses. He said he was excited about the result not minding that he failed the one exam he prepared for.
”FR was my favorite course in skills but I knew it was shaky for me after the exams. When the scores came out, lo and behold, I scored 50 in PM. I was laughing the whole day. I was so happy it was FR I failed instead of PM. And that 50 felt like Victor 1:0 ICAN,” he said.
He stated that he wrote the other two examinations a few months later and he passed. Victor then proceeded to professional, writing the examination with a determined mind and resilience.
