Brilliant Nigerian woman bags PhD in Mathematics at US university, celebrates achievement

A brilliant Nigerian woman named Nkechi Nnadi has bagged a doctorate in Mathematics at Wayne University in the United States.

Nkechi started her career as a mathematician at the Federal University of Techn ology, Owerri Nigeria where she obtained a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Mathematics with a 4.65 first-class grade.

Immediately after her bachelors, she proceeded to African University of Science and Technology, Abuja Nigeria where she earned a Master of Science (MS) in Pure and Applied Mathematics before moving to the United States.

She shared her achievement of earning the highest academic qualification in Matementics on her Linkedin. Nkechi said she successfully defended her dissertation confirming the end of the PhD.

Nkechi stated that the five-year academic journey was rewarding, filled with challenges, and growth, with many hours of study.

She recalled landing in the United States in 2019, clueless about how things work in American society with the weather being too chilly for her but she has since learned to adapt.

She said carrying a pregnancy and birthing a baby in the middle of her program was a great blessing, but it was challenging. Nkechi said that she is glad to have completed all requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics from the university.


Nkechi said during the academic journey, she received a significant amount of help from many people. She expressed her gratitude to her family, friends, dissertation committee, mentors, and colleagues who supported her through every stage.

She also thanked her professor who played a vital role in helping her develop her dissertation, and for his guidance.

Nkechi mentioned that she received a great deal of support from her professors, staff members, and fellow graduate students in the Mathematics Department at Wayne State University.

She added that her experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant allowed her to enhance her communication skills in mathematics through interactions with her students in the classroom.
