Brilliant young boy wins $150,000 full scholarship to US university, set to study International Business

A brilliant young boy named Mike Finamore has been awarded a full scholarship worth 150,000 dollars to study for his bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina in the United States.

Mike Finamore a Grade 12 student at St. Michaels University School (SMUS), United States won the our-year Morehead-Cain merit scholarship. He is one of the three Canadians and one of the 70 students worldwide to win the scholarship valued at $150,000.

The Morehead-Cain Award is a fully-funded undergraduate scholarship to the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill,United States. Mike said he found out he has won the award via email .

Mike noted that he did not believe it at first and had to have someone else read the email. After confirming he was truly awared, he called his parents and then ran to tell his academic advisor.

Mike’s Academic Advisor, Ruth McGhee said she was very excited to see him win describing him as a “very hardworking student. The scholarship award covers his tuition, living expenses, books, summer experiences, a gap year, and more.

Ruth stated that aside from Mike achieving high marks, he played soccer, rugby, and volleyball, volunteered, and took part in the school’s musicals. It’s a significant award, Finamore is a “very hardworking student and not just a high achieving kid but a great kid all around,” she said.

She added that Mike is also a strong leader noting that in 2018, through the school’s Me to We club, he started a morning drive-thru for parents dropping off their kids and raised $1,100 for the Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness.



Mike’s project won him the $2,500 Coast Capital’s Power of Youth award, which he promptly put back into the project to double efforts in 2019. Advising other students, Mike said they should be authentic not be afraid, and not think they are not good enough.

Mike mentioned that he will take advantage of additional funds awarded through Morehead-Cain to take an international gap year,  He plans to study International business, with a possible minor in dramatic arts at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the United States.
