AFRICA | A brilliant young man named Dashon Pinckney is set to become the first college graduate in his family after earning a full-ride scholarship to study at South Carolina State University (SCSU) in the United States.
Dashon was one of only nine students selected nationwide for the Clyburn Scholarship, a highly competitive award that recognizes academic excellence, leadership, and a deep commitment to community service.
Dashon's Story and How She Did It
Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, Dashon’s journey was shaped by resilience and determination.
Despite being a first-generation student, he refused to let obstacles define his path. He graduated from Eau Claire High School, where he maintained Honor Roll status throughout all four years, a testament to his discipline and focus.
He also achieved an impressive SAT score of 1250, placing him among the top-performing students in his school.
Beyond academics, Dashon stood out as a natural leader, mentoring underclassmen as a peer leader and helping them improve their performance in academics, wellness, and personal development. His leadership philosophy was simple yet powerful: “Lift others with you.”
Dashon’s hard work and community spirit earned him a life-changing opportunity, the Clyburn Scholarship, which provides full financial support for high-achieving students pursuing degrees at South Carolina State University’s Honors College.
Speaking about his achievement, Dashon shared how meaningful this next step is to him. ”SCSU is where I see possibility and empowerment. It’s where leaders who look like me have built paths for others to follow,” he said.
With the scholarship, Dashon plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or Education, fields that align with his dream of serving and empowering others through mentorship and learning.
The Dean of the Clyburn Honors College, Dr. William H. Whitaker J, described Dashon as a true embodiment of the scholarship’s values.
“A first-generation college student and servant leader, Dashon embodies the values of resilience, scholarship, and service that define the Clyburn Honors legacy,” Dr. Whitaker said.
“In choosing South Carolina State University, he sought more than a degree — he sought legacy, belonging, and purpose,” he added.
Whitaker also praised his student’s exceptional discipline and compassion, adding that Dashon’s journey represents “the next generation of Bulldog Scholars determined to create meaningful change for South Carolina and beyond.”
