Daughter of Popular Nigerian Novelist, Chinua Achebe, wins award at Harvard Medical School


The daughter of popular Nigerian Novelist, Chinua Achebe with the name Maureen Okam-Achebe has won a distinguished award at the Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts in the United States.

Maureen,the daughter of the renowned Nigerian novelist, late Chinua Achebe received the Brigham and Women’s Hospital 2024 Faculty Development and Diversity Awards at Harvard Medical School.

She was notified of the award in a letter according to a post shared by her brother who congratulated her on the great milestone..

“The 2024 Faculty Awards designation acknowledges the exceptional achievements of BWH faculty in one or more of the four pillars of academic life; clinical care, research, education, and community service,” the letter reads.

Maureen earned her first medical degree from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria after whish she went for hematology and medical oncology training at Yale School of Medicine.

She proceeded to obtain a masters degree in public health at Harvard Teaching Hospital’s Chan School of Public Health.

Maureen is currently an associate professor, at Harvard Medical School, director, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital Outpatient Infusion Center, clinical director, of the Non-Malignant Hematology Clinic, director, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Sickle Cell program; and instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.

In another story, Nigerian-American economics and Finance scholar Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Letters by the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is Nigerian economist and international development expert who serves as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), making her the first woman and the first African to hold this position.

She was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, an achievement she shared on her Twitter with pictures from the ceremony. Read more about Dr. Ngozi HERE.
