A brilliant African man named Dehshini Alli has been awarded the prestigious Paul and Shelagh Whelton Scholarship in recognition of his outstanding academic and research work in cardiovascular epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University in the United States.
Originally from Ghana, Alli is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Epidemiology at the renowned Bloomberg School of Public Health.
His passion for medicine and public health started years ago at the University for Development Studies in Ghana, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree in 2020.
Following his graduation, Alli worked as a medical doctor for three years, building valuable experience before deciding to further his education abroad.

At Johns Hopkins, Alli continued his tradition of excellence, and that commitment was recently recognized with the Paul and Shelagh Whelton Scholarship Award—a $5,000 honor reserved for outstanding MD or doctoral candidates at the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research.
The award, created by Dr. Paul Whelton and his wife, Shelagh, was designed to support emerging physician-scientists who are dedicated to advancing public health. Dr. Whelton’s legacy includes major breakthroughs in hypertension and kidney disease research.
His leadership as the founding director of the Welch Center helped build a world-class environment for training public health professionals—a legacy that continues to influence the field globally.
Reflecting on the honor, Alli expressed deep gratitude to the Wheltons, as well as to his mentors, Dr. Jung-Im Shin and Dr. Elizabeth Selvin, who currently directs the Welch Center. He acknowledged that their unwavering support and mentorship have played a key role in shaping his research path.
