An exceptional 17-year-old boy named Elijah Precciely has made history, becoming the youngest student to graduate in the 144-year history of Southern University and A&M College in the United States.
Elijah graduated with bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Physics, completing a journey that began when he first stepped into the university classroom as a child.
Elijah's Story and How He Did It
Elijah’s academic journey started long before he became a university student. He was homeschooled by his parents, who quickly noticed his unusual curiosity and passion for learning.
From a young age, he asked complex questions about science, the human body, and how things worked.
Teachers at his preschool also realized his advanced abilities early. By the time he was 18 months old, educators reportedly said they had nothing left to teach him and recommended that he move to classes with older children.
Elijah began taking college-level classes at Southern University when he was just eight years old, after his mother introduced him to a summer program for gifted students. After impressing faculty members, including physicist Diola Bagayoko, he was allowed to begin attending classes.
At 11 years old, he was officially admitted to the university with a full scholarship, becoming the youngest student ever enrolled at the institution.
His mother often accompanied him to class in the early years, supervising his studies until he was old enough to attend lectures independently.
During his time at the university, Elijah explored several advanced scientific topics and research projects.
He worked on studies involving carbon nanotubes and self-repairing concrete, and even explored ideas like electrostatic energy-generating technology.
Despite his impressive academic ability, Elijah said his biggest challenge surprisingly came in psychology class, where he once earned a B grade. “I never knew it would be my Achilles’ heel. I got a ‘B’ in Psychology,” he joked.
Although Elijah’s achievement broke a historic record, his goal is not just to set records but to change lives. “I don’t look for just breaking records. I look for changing lives. In that, I will break records,” he said.
He also launched a company aimed at helping young talents discover their abilities, reflecting his desire to inspire other gifted children.
Elijah’s parents, Steve and Pamela Precciely, say his academic acceleration was possible because they allowed him to learn at his own pace without limiting his curiosity.
His father, Steve, explained that many students may skip a grade or start college early, but starting university at 11 years old is extremely rare.
Also, a strong support network of family members, mentors, and professors played a key role in nurturing his development.
After six intense years of university study, Elijah not only graduated from Southern University with a bachelor’s degree but also with hundreds of hours of research and academic credits.
Also, he became the youngest graduate in Louisiana history and across historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Despite the historic achievement, Elijah says he wants his work and research to speak louder than his age.
For now, the teenage prodigy is taking a short break before his next academic step, with his next goal being to get a driver’s license before he turns 18.
