Exceptional 43-year-old man wins tough battle against meningitis to bag Engineering degree

An exceptional 43-year-old man named Sinethemba Bili has faced tough times while trying to attain a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in South Africa.

Sinethemba who has been performing great in the music industry as a sound engineer for over 20 years of his life decided to enroll at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) to have a Bachelor’s Degree that will back up his expertise in the field.

Despite his age, Sinethemba enrolled for a Bachelor’s Degree in Music at the age of 37. “I always had a passion for music and wanted to learn and educate myself within its discipline. I enrolled at UFH Music Department and finally found my niche,” said Sinethemba

However, during the course of his study at the university, while he was in his second year, he fell ill and was diagnosed with meningitis – an inflammation (swelling) of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

“This was a difficult time for me as I was writing my dissertation. I had to put a halt on my studies and focus on my health,” Sinethemba recounted.

He spent two months in hospital and a few more months recovering at home. In 2019 he decided to give pursuing his studies another shot. “I enrolled again, not fully recovered, but I was determined to further and complete my studies,” he said.
