Exceptional African-American Lady wins two science and technology scholarships, gets inducted into the US Astronaut community of scholars

An exceptional African-American Lady by name, Mikayla Harris has won two science and technology awards including the prestigious Astronaut Scholarship Foundation award and the Neil Armstrong Award of Excellence.

Mikayla Harris is a senior from the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences of Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.

She applied for the Astronaut Scholarship with an aim to represent Black women in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). She received $15,000 in scholarship awards, among others.

“I wanted to apply to represent Morgan State as well as Black women in STEM. There is not enough biomedical research that includes Black people, people of color and other minority groups,” Harris said in a press release provided by Morgan State University.

Speaking about her she got the award, Harris noted that being a member of her university’s Student Research Center, she was opened to more opportunities to learn learn about research and create research projects on her own. She credits the organization for her recent achievement of the Astronaut Scholarship where she highlighted her research activities.

Aside being one of the 60 students from 44 universities that received the $15,000 Astronaut Scholarship Foundation award, Harris also received her Neil Armstrong Award of Excellence and was inducted into the national Astronaut Scholar Honor Society.

She is also set to participate in a full-year professional mentoring program, a professional development program, and several foundation events.

Harris plans to conclude her program at the Morgan State University a year early in 2022 (this year). She plans to thereafter pursue a MD-PhD degree and study more about racial health disparities, especially the differences in female infertility.

Harris is the second consecutive Morgan State University student to win the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation award, which is given to top-performing junior and senior students in the field of STEM. The award was established by the Mercury Astronauts in 1984.
