For this year’s round of applications, Facebook had connected with some of the research team to discuss what they look for in an application and what advice they would give to prospective applicants.
Scholarship Region would be drawing from their experience reading hundreds of research statements, CVs, and letters of recommendation which was supplied to Facebook to came up with the following five tips.
Tip 1: Communicate Clearly on your Research
Applicants are expected to come up with a write-up on their research proposal. This write-up is expected to communicate some key impact, such as;
- tackling real problems with novel solutions,
- explaining the problem and its importance,
- focusing on the novelty of the proposed solution compared to past work, and
- forming concrete steps that show results within a two- to three-year time frame.
Tip 2: Focus on how you frame your Research Statement
Applicants should note that the Framing [of your research statement] matters for a successful application.
Consider the following guidelines when framing your proposals;
- What is the problem?
- Why is it important?
- Why is it not solved yet?
- What is the shape of your proposed solution?
- How is your research addressing the problem?
It is very important to understand very clearly the potential relevance to Facebook’s business over the short, mid, and long term.
Tip 3: Do some research on Facebook challenges before writingÂ
Applicants are expected to take time to understand Facebook’s challenges within their research domain and write down which applications could benefit from their knowledge.
It is also important for reviewers to understand how you would benefit from being a Facebook Fellow and how Facebook will influence your academic career.

On refining the information in your Fellowship application, the summary of your work should be very clear, and objectives should be included in your abstracts so that your research interests will be understood.
Tip 5: Confirm that your write-up communicates well
It’s important to check for readability to make sure reviewers can easily understand what you are trying to convey.
Although, the research itself matters way more than grammar, however, if reviewers can not fully understand what they are reading, then they can not appreciate the research.
