AFRICA | An exceptional African Athlete, Faith Kipyegon earns honorary doctorate.
Faith Kipyegon, a Kenyan and three-time Olympic champion, has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Education degree (Honoris Causa) by the University of Eldoret, Kenya.
This prestigious recognition celebrates her remarkable achievements on and off the track. Faith also made history as the first female recipient of an honorary degree from the university.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Thomas Cheruiyot, highlighted her exceptional contributions during a heartfelt citation. He praised not only her sporting excellence but also her efforts to uplift the community, particularly through education and advocacy for girls and women.

During the ceremony, Faith was adorned with the ceremonial academic gown, followed by the Chancellor, Dr. Ismail Buro, placing the graduation cap on her head. The moment symbolized her new title: “Doctor.”
Sharing her achievement on Instagram, Kipyegon wrote, “I am greatly honored to receive an honorary Doctorate degree in Education from The University of Eldoret,” she said.
Faith’s accomplishments on the track are unmatched. At the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, she defended her 1500m title for the third consecutive time, setting an Olympic record of 3:51.29.
This milestone added to her gold medal victories in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, cementing her legacy as one of the greatest middle-distance runners at just 30-years-old.
Off the track, Faith has used her platform to empower underprivileged girls and young mothers. Through her foundation, sponsored by Nike, she supports education initiatives with the rallying call, “To Empower a Woman is to Empower Humanity.”
She reflected on her journey from running barefoot as a child to becoming a global icon in her acceptance speech. “This moment is humbling. I will forever be grateful for this recognition,” she said.
Faith credited her success to the unwavering support of her family, including her husband, Timothy Kitum, their daughter Alyn, and her parents.
