A brilliant young Nigerian lady named Aliyu Marvelous has demonstrated remarkable resilience after graduating with a First-Class degree in Mathematics with an outstanding 4.85 cumulative grade point average (CGPA) from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria.
Her academic success is even more inspiring because it came during one of the most painful periods of her life.
Marvelous' Story and How She Did It
Marvelous began her academic journey at the University of Ilorin in 2021. However, just three months after resuming her studies, she experienced a heartbreaking loss when her mother passed away.
The tragedy came at a time when she was still trying to adjust to university life. The grief and emotional weight of the loss nearly caused her to abandon her studies. Reflecting on the difficult period, she said:
“It was one of the hardest moments of my life. Everything suddenly felt uncertain. I was grieving, trying to adjust to a new environment, and learning to stand on my own.”

Despite the pain, Marvelous chose not to give up. Instead, she channeled her grief into determination, focusing on her academics and pushing herself to succeed.
She credited the support of her sister, who stepped into a motherly role during that period, for helping her stay strong.
“There were days when I almost gave up, but somehow grace found me. Through the support of amazing people, especially my sister, who became a mother and cheerleader all in one, I kept going,” she said.
Determined to make her family proud, she consistently maintained excellent academic performance throughout her four-year program.
Beyond academics, Marvelous was actively involved in extracurricular activities during her time at the university.
She served as the General Secretary of the Mathematics Students Christian Fellowship (MSCF) for three consecutive years. She also participated in volleyball and other student activities, maintaining a balanced university experience.
Her dedication and academic excellence earned her several recognitions, including the MTN Foundation Scholarship, which supported her financially during her studies
Also, she earned the Nigerian Association of Mathematical Science Students Excellence Award, one of the highest recognitions given to mathematics students.
At the end of her academic journey, Marvelous graduated with a 4.85 CGPA, earning First-Class honors in Mathematics. Sharing the milestone, she described the achievement as both proud and emotional.
“Finishing with a First Class still feels surreal. It’s proof that pain can birth strength, and that even in your lowest moments, you can rise,” she wrote on LinkedIn.
Marvelous hopes her story will encourage others who are facing difficult moments in life. “To anyone currently going through something tough, please don’t stop believing in yourself. Your story can still end beautifully,” she stated.
