AMERICA | 11-year-old genius boy graduates US high school, gains admission to Texas University.
11 years old, Cannan Huey-You has graduated from Accommodated Learning Academy, a private Christian high school in the United States, marking an extraordinary academic milestone.
Following in the footsteps of his older brother, Carson Huey-You, Cannan has gained admission to Texas Christian University (TCU) to pursue a bachelor’s degree in physics. Even before his admission, the young prodigy was already making strides in academia.
While still in high school, Cannan collaborated with Dr. Kat Barger, an assistant professor at TCU, on a research project involving radio observations of gas clouds near the Milky Way. Cannan’s long-standing interest in astronomy made him a natural fit for the project.

“I met Dr. Kat, and she told me about her research program. Mom decided it would be good to work on,” Cannan explained.
Cannan and his older brother Carson were homeschooled by their mother, Claretta Kimp, until the age of five. When Cannan expressed a desire to attend school with his friends, Claretta enrolled him in kindergarten, where he thrived socially.
However, by first grade, Cannan became bored with the curriculum and requested to accelerate his education. After testing, he was placed in eighth grade at the age of seven, where he quickly adapted and was accepted by his older peers.
As Cannan navigates life at TCU, his mother remains a steadfast presence, offering emotional support to both him and Carson. “I’m just blessed that I can be with them on campus five days a week,” Claretta said.
She credits TCU for fostering a supportive environment for her sons, with special acknowledgment to Dr. Magnus Rittby, a long-time mentor and surrogate father figure. “TCU is our family, and so supportive. When I need help, they are there for me. I could not do it alone,” Claretta added.
Unlike many siblings, the Huey-You brothers share a unique bond. Carson often tutors Cannan in college classrooms, and their sibling rivalry is limited to playful lightsaber battles, their mother noted with a smile.
Looking ahead, Cannan hopes to follow in Carson’s footsteps by earning a PhD in astrophysics.
He also dreams of becoming an astronaut, a goal solidified after hearing astronaut Anousheh Ansari speak at TCU. Ansari, who promised to attend Cannan’s first space launch, advised him to diversify his skillset.
Taking her advice to heart, Cannan is considering adding an engineering degree to enhance his chances of going into space.
