He earned a prestigious ₦61 million (€36,000) scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Changing Education at the University of Helsinki, Finland — one of the top 100 universities in the world.
Henry's Story and How He Did It
Henry’s academic journey began in 2016, when he gained admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to study Education and Igbo Linguistics. Coming from a modest background, he faced major financial challenges that almost made him to give up his education.
But giving up was never an option, “Funds were a threat at a time, life was depressing, but giving up was not on the list,” Henry recalled. “It was either side hustle or nothing,” he said in a post on LinkedIn.
During long vacations, Henry worked as a tricycle rider in New Nsukka, using the income to sponsor nearly 70% of his education. Despite the exhausting routine of juggling work and studies, he maintained his focus, graduating in 2021 with a remarkable 4.22 CGPA.

Despite his challenges, Henry was active in school beyond academics. At UNN, he was active in student leadership, holding four leadership positions and traveling across four states to represent his faculty in educational programs.
He also volunteered to teach first-year students courses such as the History of Education, demonstrating his commitment to both learning and mentorship.
“UNN was a central theme in my autobiography. It molded my leadership, character, and resilience,” Henry wrote.
After his undergraduate studies, Henry’s desire for global exposure led him to begin applying for postgraduate scholarships abroad. However, the process was not easy.
He faced multiple rejections that tested his patience and faith. Still, he held on to his dream.
In 2025, Henry was selected among only 60 international scholars chosen from hundreds of global applicants for the University of Helsinki’s MA in Changing Education program.
The fully funded €36,000 scholarship (over ₦61 million) will cover his tuition and living expenses for two years, allowing him to explore advanced knowledge in education reform, leadership, and learning innovation.
Through the program, Henry will gain expertise in critical thinking, educational policy design, and scientific communication, preparing him for a career in research, administration, and training to transform education in Nigeria and beyond.
For Henry, this achievement is more than personal success; it is a symbol of resilience, purpose, and hope for countless young Nigerians striving against financial odds.
“Every struggle, setback, and late night of hard work was worth it. I’m stepping into this new chapter with a commitment to bring back knowledge that supports sustainable and equal access to education through technology,” he said.
He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his family, mentors, and friends for their unwavering support and to the University of Helsinki for “investing in young leaders committed to making a difference.”
To aspiring scholars, Henry encourages them to start and remain resilient no matter the challenges they face.
“Take the leap. The process will challenge you, transform you, and open doors to global opportunities. Never give up,” he said.
