A brilliant young doctor named Mejury Chipato, has transformed her life story from growing up in poverty and attending school barefooted in rural Zimbabwe to becoming a globally recognized medical doctor, public health advocate, and women’s empowerment leader.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that a person’s background does not determine their future.
Dr. Mejury's Story and How She Did It
Born and raised in rural Masvingo, Zimbabwe, Mejury grew up in difficult conditions where access to opportunities was limited. As a child, she attended primary school barefoot, yet even at a young age, she carried big dreams for herself and her community.
“Growing up, I always wanted to succeed and change the narrative of my life, my family, and that of my community,” she shared.
From the beginning, her path to success was filled with obstacles. When she started her Advanced Level studies, delays in her Ordinary Level examination results initially placed her in the commercial studies department instead of the sciences.
Determined to pursue medicine, she later switched to science subjects, studying Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry. But even that was only the beginning of her struggles.

Shortly after beginning Form Five, Mejury was arrested for a crime she did not commit. She spent a night in a police cell and was dragged to court, nearly facing conviction as a felon.
At another critical point in her life, she received false HIV-positive test results just as she was preparing to leave Zimbabwe for university studies under a fully funded government scholarship. The situation almost cost her the scholarship opportunity entirely.
Despite those painful experiences, she refused to give up. Her educational journey later took her to Algeria, where she first studied Microbiology in French for five years at Université des Sciences et de la Technologie Houari Boumediène.
Adjusting to a new country, language, and academic system was challenging. She even had to repeat her first year in Microbiology after enrolling late. Still, she was still determined to study Medicine.
That dream, however, came with repeated rejection. Mejury applied to medical school multiple times and faced rejection after rejection. On one occasion, she was offered Veterinary Sciences instead of Medicine.
Another time, she was denied admission because of her age. In total, she was rejected four times before finally gaining admission to medical school at the age of 25.
Rather than seeing delay as failure, she kept pushing forward. “I got rejected for entry into medical school four times before finally getting accepted. Rejection and delay are not denial,” she said.
Eventually, on her fifth attempt, she gained admission into medical school using her Microbiology degree as part of her application credentials.
She later earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from Gannan Medical University, officially becoming a medical doctor.
While studying abroad, she also explored French Language and Literature at University of Oran 1 Ahmed Ben Bella, further expanding her academic exposure and global perspective.
Driven by a passion for improving healthcare systems, Mejury later earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Maternal and Child Health from the James Lind Institute.
She is currently pursuing another master’s degree in Global Management in Healthcare Delivery at the Thunderbird School of Global Management to strengthen her expertise in healthcare leadership and global health systems.
After completing her education, Dr. Mejury began building a career focused not only on medicine but also on transforming healthcare delivery and public health systems, especially in underserved communities.
Her innovative contributions quickly gained recognition. In 2024, she was appointed Zimbabwe’s Health Ambassador for the African Health Excellence Awards, giving her a platform to advocate for healthcare improvements and policies across Africa.
Beyond medicine, Mejury discovered another major calling, to empower women. She founded Women of Influence, Faith & Excellence (W.I.F.E.), an initiative dedicated to educating, empowering, and uplifting women around the world. Through the platform, she promotes leadership, integrity, and social impact among women across different sectors.
She also established the Patience of Hope Foundation, a philanthropic organization focused on supporting underprivileged children and orphans in Zimbabwe through access to education and healthcare.
Her impact has earned her several recognitions, including health & medical excellence award by the Zimbabwe CEO Network, recognition among the 50 Most Influential Women in Zimbabwe for 2024 by the Women Corporate Directors Network.
Despite her global achievements, Mejury says she never forgets where she came from. “My background is my source of motivation to succeed,” she explained.
She credits God, her parents, family sacrifices, and her dreams as the driving force behind her perseverance through every difficult season.
“When I think of the many sacrifices my family made for me to be where I am today, I get the strength to keep going,” she said.
