A determined Nigerian graduate, Obot Idongesit, has proven that academic setbacks do not define your future after transforming his performance and graduating with honors from the University of Ibadan.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development with Second Class Upper Honours, a remarkable turnaround from where he started.
Obot's Story and How She Did It
Obot’s journey began on a challenging note. In his first year (100 level), he recorded a CGPA of 1.88/4.00, placing him in the third-class category. For many students, this could have been discouraging, but for him, it became a wake-up call.
Rather than give up, he made a conscious decision to rewrite his story. By 200 level, he improved slightly to a 2.29 CGPA, but he knew he was capable of much more.
Determined to turn things around, he changed his study habits, stayed consistent, and remained focused on his goal. His breakthrough came in 300 level, where he finished with an outstanding performance, scoring 17 A’s out of 21 courses and raising his CGPA to 2.81.
In 400 level, the pressure increased, and although he recorded 5 A’s and several B’s out of 11 courses, he stayed resilient despite feeling disappointed.

By his final year (500 level), Obot approached his studies with calm determination and renewed focus. He went on to achieve 13 A’s out of 17 courses, completing his academic comeback and securing a strong final CGPA.
Reflecting on his journey, he shared a powerful message. “It’s not how you start, but how you finish. My journey at the University of Ibadan is a testament to that,” he said.
He also encouraged students currently struggling academically to remain hopeful and committed. “To anyone staring at results they’re not proud of—I dare you to dream. I did, and I worked for it,” he said.
Beyond academics, Obot has developed a strong interest in data analysis, particularly within the agribusiness supply chain, and is open to opportunities where he can apply his skills and make meaningful impact.
