How Oladepo Caleb used NELFUND to fund his education and emerged overall best student of LAUTECH with 4.89CGPA

A brilliant Nigerian man named Oladepo Caleb Olugbenga has achieved remarkable academic success after emerging as the overall best graduating student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering with an outstanding 4.89 cumulative grade point average out of 5.00.

His achievement is a story of excellence, resilience, and a reminder that your background does not determine your destiny.

Oladepo's Story and How She Did It

Oladepo began his academic journey at LAUTECH in 2021. From his first year, he remained focused and consistent, steadily rising to the top of his class. After years of hard work, he graduated as the university’s best overall student.

But behind the success story was a journey filled with challenges.

In a post shared on X (formerly twitter), Oladepo opened up about his humble background and the struggles he faced while pursuing his dreams. He revealed that he was raised in a small village in Osun State in a modest family of five.

He attended public primary and secondary schools because private education was beyond what his family could afford.

According to him, survival itself was often difficult. Oladepo walked long distances to school every day while his parents worked tirelessly at different jobs just to provide for the family.

For nine years before entering university, they lived without electricity or television, relying only on lanterns and candles. Despite those hardships, he kept pushing and eventually he gained admission into university.

But his challenges did not stop there. At the university, he faced finacial challenge that almost affected his studies until he came across the Nigerian Education Loan Fund(NELFUND).

Oladepo credited the NELFUND for playing a major role in helping him complete his studies. “I’m honored to let you know that I am the Best Graduating Student of LAUTECH. Your loans made it possible,” he wrote on X.

Oladepo explained that the support helped cover tuition and essential academic needs, adding that without it, his journey would have been much harder.

“For me personally, NELFUND was not incidental; it was instrumental and to acknowledge what helped one’s journey is neither propaganda nor misplaced allegiance. It is simply an act of appreciation. “Thank you @NELFUND and everyone that contributed to this success,” he said.

He also shared that in his third year, a coursemate’s father, someone he once tutored, gifted him his first smartphone, which he still uses. On several occasions, compassionate lecturers also provided him with clothing and other support.

Reflecting on his journey, he said: “Not all of us are born with a silver spoon. Some of us climbed the ladder by holding on to every rung of legitimate support we could find.”

Beyond academics, Oladepo has shown strong passion for innovation and engineering. As a student, he was active in tutoring students, leadership, volunteering, and professional organizations such as IEEE and other engineering bodies.
