How Oluwaseun Adasu gained PhD admission at US university with a first-class degree in Chemistry

A brilliant Nigerian Lady named Oluwaseun Aduloju has graduated with a First Class bachelor’s degree in Industrial Chemistry from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Nigeria.

Her story culminated in an extraordinary milestone,  securing admission into a PhD programme in Chemistry at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, USA, without first earning a master’s degree.

Oluwaseun’s academic journey is one of growth, resilience, friendship, and faith as she went from facing a setback in her first year to graduating with excellence.

Oluwaseun's Story and How She Did It

Oluwaseun began her academic journey at OAU in 2019, entering the university as a bright student fresh from secondary school. Like many high-performing students, she believed she could navigate university academics independently.

Reality, however, had other plans. Her first semester GPA of 3.3 (Second Class Lower) came as a shock. “Will a First Class be possible?” became a recurring question in her mind.

She cried, prayed, and made a conscious decision not to give up. By her second semester, she improved to a 3.9 GPA, signaling the start of a quiet but determined comeback. At the time, she wasn’t chasing a First Class, she simply wanted to do well.

Despite improvement, some hurdles on the path did not make it easy. Courses like Mathematics (MTH) and Physics (PHY) posed constant challenges, shaking her confidence. But when she met two classmates, their impact helped her overcome them.

What began as strategic study sessions evolved into deep friendships. Together, they formed “The Trio” — a support system built on collaboration, encouragement, and shared goals.

Through teamwork, perseverance, and faith, Oluwaseun improved academically and personally. The experience taught her a powerful lesson: no one truly succeeds alone.

Year after year, her grades improved.  She became more confident and was able to overcome her fear with discipline.

By the end of her programme, Oluwaseun graduated as the 2nd best female student in the Department of Chemistry, earning a First Class degree with a CGPA of 4.51/5.0 — a remarkable transformation from where she began.

Her journey became living proof that setbacks are not failures, but stepping stones. While completing her undergraduate degree, Oluwaseun began applying for graduate studies abroad. Her strong academic record, research potential, and consistent growth paid off.

Exactly one week after her convocation, she received an offer into a PhD programme in Chemistry at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, bypassing the conventional requirement of a master’s degree.

The journey did not end with the admission letter. From navigating the visa process to settling into a new environment in the United States, Oluwaseun faced fresh challenges,  once again leaning on faith, family, mentors, and friends.

Grateful and reflective, she credited God’s guidance for every step of the journey in a Linkedin post.

As she begins her PhD, she looks forward to impactful research, innovative scientific contributions, and continued personal growth.
