AFRICA | A young lady from Ghana named Xorlali Opel, who worked as a cleaner to sponsor her education,n has achieved remarkable success, graduating as the valedictorian of Central University, Ghana, with an impressive 3.95 cumulative grade point average in Psychology.
Xorlali's Story and How She Did It
Xorlali’s academic journey was not a smooth one. After completing Senior High School, she spent three years at home because her family could not afford tuition.
Yet, she refused to let circumstances silence her dreams. While waiting for the right time to begin university, she poured her energy into growth.
She went online and self-studied neuroscience, a subject she had always been passionate about. She also taught herself graphic design and creative writing, building skills that would one day complement her academic excellence.
All of this learning happened in between long hours of working as a cleaner, earning just enough to support her siblings while saving for school.

When she finally gained admission to Central University, Xorlali carried the same determination into the classroom.
She excelled in her Psychology program, consistently ranking at the top of her class until she eventually graduated with a near-perfect 3.95 CGPA, earning the title of valedictorian.
Her extraordinary performance did not go unnoticed. During the graduation ceremony, she was celebrated with notable prizes: a MacBook, $1,000, and a certificate, all sponsored by the ICGC Head Office.
The Chancellor, Pastor Mensa Otabil, personally presented the award, a moment she said symbolized how far she had come from her days of scrubbing floors.
In her valedictory speech, Xorlali spoke with gratitude and reflection. She recalled the years of waiting, the late nights of self-learning, and the humble cleaning job that funded her dreams.
“I did all of this while teaching myself, supporting my siblings, and believing that one day, the right opportunity would come,” she shared with emotion.
Xorlali thanked her family, friends, and the entire university community for their encouragement and support throughout her journey. She also celebrated her fellow graduates, urging them to carry the spirit of excellence into the next chapter of their lives.
