A brilliant Nigerian woman named Chisom Okongwu has achieved a significant milestone by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Bowie State University in the United States. Her remarkable accomplishment makes her the first in her family to graduate from college.
Sharing her achievement on Instagram, Chisom expressed how meaningful this moment was, not just for herself but for her family and ancestors.
“As a first-generation college graduate from Bowie State University, this diploma represents more than just my journey. It carries the dreams of my ancestors and paves the way for generations to come,” she wrote.

Chisom revealed on the university’s website that her passion for nursing began at the age of 16 when she cared for her grandmother, who had suffered a stroke. This experience fueled her desire to advocate for people in their most vulnerable moments.
“They say nursing school changes you, and they weren’t lying. Through countless sleepless nights, endless study sessions, and more coffee than I can count — WE MADE IT,” she reflected.
During her time at Bowie State, Chisom consistently excelled. She made the Dean’s List honors three times, served as a Student Ambassador, and represented her class.
In addition to her academic achievements, Chisom gained invaluable professional experience as a student nurse extern.
She worked at prestigious institutions, including MedStar Health, where she contributed to perioperative services, and Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she honed her skills in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Chisom moved to the United States to live with her aunt and uncle, a decision that required immense courage. While the transition from Nigeria to the US was challenging, she credits her family, faith, and professors for their unwavering support.
“I had a lot of loved ones in my corner praying for me, encouraging me, and wishing me well. My parents and siblings were my greatest source of strength, they called very often to pray and encourage me,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Chisom relied on the guidance of her professors and the support of her extended family to achieve her goals.
Being the first person in her family to graduate from college is a source of pride for Chisom, who is determined to inspire future generations.
“I’m definitely going to tell my kids, grandkids and future generations that the first graduate in the family went to Bowie State,” she said.
Looking back, Chisom reflects on how every late-night study session and every moment of doubt shaped her into the person she is today. Looking forward, she is excited to begin her nursing career in the Cardiovascular ICU at MedStar Health, one of the nation’s most prestigious cardiac hospitals.
“From classroom to caring for the most critical cardiac patients — dreams really do come true! To my future patients: I’m ready to serve with everything I’ve learned,” she said.
